What is Lorazepam
Lorazepam is the active ingredient that is found in an anti-anxiety medication known as Ativan to many. Back in 2019, Lorazepam medications were the 69th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with over 10,000,000 prescriptions being reported throughout that year. Lorazepam has been on the World Health Organizations List of Essential Medicines for decades and is offered in many different generic forms.
Lorazepam is a member of the benzodiazepine family of medications, which are mainly used in the treatment of anxiety, and sleeping disorders linked to anxiety. Lorazepam works by acting on the central nervous system (CNS), or the nerves and brain, to produce and distribute a calming effect throughout the body, relieving feelings of anxiousness. Benzodiazepines like Lorazepam increase the activity of GABA, a neurotransmitter in the CNS. This is the neurotransmitter that is responsible for maintaining sleepiness, and feelings of relaxation.
For most patients Lorazepam will begin to show its effects between 20-30 minutes, taking roughly 45-60 minutes before it shows the entirety of its effects. The half-life of this medication is around 6-8 hours, depending on the persons age, dosage taken, and tolerance.
What is Lorazepam Used for?
Lorazepam, best known by its name-brand title Ativan, is a medication that is best known for its ability to battle feelings of anxiety, both minor and severe. Alongside its ability to treat anxiety disorders, these tablets have also been shown to have great success when being used as sleeping pills by those who have trouble sleeping, or insomnia. Insomnia can be brought on by anxiety experienced at night, and anxiety can be brought on by insomnia; this can be an endless cycle without medications like Lorazepam.
Lorazepam has also been shown to be of great help for those who regularly have feelings of severe agitation without reason. It can help by calming nerves, sedating the brain, helping ease overthinking, or whatever is causing the agitation. It is said that Lorazepam also has anti-convulsive characteristics, which proves to drastically decrease those who experience seizures due to epilepsy. Studies have also shown Lorazepam helps stop seizures brought on by alcohol withdrawal, as well as helps to balance chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
Additional Benefits of Lorazepam
Over the several decades that Lorazepam has been available as a pharmaceutical option, it has shown itself to offer incredible benefits time and time again. In a world that has so many people regularly suffering from anxiety disorders, anti-anxiety medications such as Lorazepam are on the top side of necessary medications. People who are regularly dealing with heavy bouts of anxiety, and/or anxiety-induced insomnia know all too well how much sedative assistance can change their lives.
The benefits of Lorazepam for those who regularly have anxiety can be observed in days for some, and in weeks for others. For those who are using the medication for battling insomnia, it is intended to be used as a tool rather than a long-term answer to the condition. It can benefit the insomnia patient by helping build a healthier sleeping pattern, but the patient must also make many changes to their bedtime habits. For many, without the help of Lorazepam, these habits are impossible to break.
Having anxiety regularly means that relaxation, and a calm mind are rarely achievable. When using Lorazepam for anxiety, the patient will benefit massively from the ability to finally relax, while not overthinking about things from the past, or small life problems. With regular use of this medication, it is likely that anxious feelings will dissipate entirely, making life in general much more enjoyable.
